How Do You Spell ‘Magnificent’? 2 Words: Hugo Lloris

“We wanted to get 3 points, but Lazio are a great team so it’s a good point for us” Hugo Lloris after the match

Lazio v Spurs might have well been Lazio v Lloris. Hugo Lloris has produced a string of saves to help secure an important point for Spurs, who still need one more game against Panathinaikos, to qualify for the knock out stages. It was Lloris best performance in a Spurs shirt yet. The keeper was alert, confident and was not afraid to rush off his line to save his team blushes. I can’t say the same for the entire team, but if Lloris was not performing to standard, the team would have easily lost 4-0.

Yet, Bale had a goal incorrectly ruled off side.

Lloris trended on Twitter for all the right reasons and AVB was proud of him, saying:

“Hugo was extremely good, that is what we expect and he was extremely good.”

Lazio was superior throughout the game and should have won, yes, but they had Lloris to deal with and he frustrated them all evening long. Lazio’s manager praised Lloris’ game:

“We only lacked a goal tonight, and a bit of good luck. Their goalkeeper proved his value – he’s the French national team goalkeeper and tonight he definitely proved how talented he is.”

Notable minutes via

28′ What a chance to break the deadlock! Luis Cavanda drives down the flank before picking out Libor Kozak with a defense splitting pass. With just Lloris to beat the striker hits his effort low but the ex-Lyon shotstopper does well to save with his feet and the ball goes out for a corner. That’s a couple of smart saves he’s made now.

38′ Oof, and Walker is thrown straight into the action as Ledesma plays a fine through-ball to feed Kozak one-on-one with Lloris, only for the goalkeeer – who, for my money, is enjoying his best game in a Spurs shirt – glides out and averts the danger at the edge of his area. Superb goalkeeping.

65′ Lloris again flies out his goal to clear the ball away with Mauri closing him down. His had an impressive game tonight!

67′ The France number one has struggled to establish himself as the club’s first-choice but he could have done enough to cement his spot.

80′ Lloris again does well. This time to punching ball away under pressure from Mauri and wins a free-kick in the process.

85′ Stunning save from Lloris. Ciani gets up high to meet a corner and powers his headed effort down but Lloris gets down low to prevent the ball from finding the back of the net. Yet another stop to add to his growing collection tonight!

92′ Floccari has a chance to score but fails to force Lloris into a save as he hits his effort wide of the goal.

It was a fine defensive display from Lloris, having 12 goal kicks and 3 great saves. The point was well fought for and well earned by Lloris and I hope on December 6th, the team will come out and fight for a win.
